THE DOMESTIC OIL TANK REMOVAL PROCESS
Oil tank replacement should be carried out by a specialist engineer to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Here’s an overview of our process:
Assessment
Our engineer assesses the remaining oil in the tank and identifies any contaminated oil at the bottom, which must be disposed of following specific environmental rules.
Pumping Clean oil
Clean oil, located above the contaminated layer, is pumped out of the tank using a professional commercial pump into a holding tank.
Disposal of Contaminated Oil
Contaminated oil at the tank's bottom is pumped out and transferred into a waste oil container, ready for disposal at our licensed site.
Cleaning and Disconnecting
After removing all old and contaminated oil, the tank is cleaned, de-gassed, and disconnected from the pipes and its base. The engineer performs a gas-free test and issues a certificate if successful.
Tank Replacement
The old tank is replaced with a new one. If needed, alterations such as laying a new base are carried out before the new tank is installed.
Waste Transfer Note
An engineer issues a waste transfer notice, covering the removal of hazardous waste material from the site.
Tank Certification
All new installations are registered with OFTEC to meet current building regulations. Where fire rated tanks are installed, a building notice will be submitted to your local authority in order to comply.

- If the tanks are to be removed whole, the physical dimensions of the tank/s to allow us to allocate the transport required.
- The current or last grade of fuel or oil held in the tank.
- Whether the tanks are above or below ground and what access we have to the tanks.
- If the tank or tanks are no longer in use, the level of fuel / oil in them for disposal.
- If possible, some pictures of the tanks and subsequent access e.g. beneath manhole covers or access for large vehicles.

Providing the preferred location meets current regulations, a like-for-like tank could be installed. If, however, any issues are highlighted, e.g. if your tank is within 1800mm of non-fire-rated eaves of a building, then other arrangements would have to be made to make your new tank compliant.
It is more than likely that your tank exchange will be completed within a day. However, if alterations need to be made, e.g. a new base laid, we would carry out the preparatory work prior to disconnecting your tank. We always aim to reduce inconvenience to a minimum and would work closely with you to ensure your requirements are met. Where required, a temporary tank can be installed.
