UNDERGROUND FUEL TANK CLEANING
Petrol Tank Cleaning & Diesel Tank Tank Cleaning Services
Our underground fuel tank cleaning services range from pro-active cleaning to prevent future contamination issues or in preparation for decommissioning, through to re-active cleaning following an incident with your tank. The areas generally covered by this service are diesel tank cleaning and petrol tank cleaning.
Depending on the reason for having your fuel tank cleaned, we can produce samples of the waste found in the tank, accompanied by a thorough visual inspection with photographic evidence and a written report if required. If needed, your fuel tank can then be fully pressure tested and certified in order to meet legislative obligations.

What happens to the fuel in my storage tank whilst it is cleaned?
Discovering you have a contamination problem in your diesel tank doesn’t mean that you are going to lose your stock of diesel. There are numerous situations that can arise from contamination in your tank, the majority of which can be fixed with a tank clean. The ideal situation would be for you to use your stock down as far as possible so that the tank bottoms can be pumped into IBC’s for the duration of the tank clean. If this isn’t possible, we can bring in a temporary holding tank to transfer your fuel. Once the tank has been cleaned, any remaining fuel can be transferred back into the tank, either by pumping directly in, or by passing it through our mobile centrifuge in order to polish it first.
How do you minimise the risks when cleaning an underground petrol tank?
An empty and open petrol tank is a high risk area deemed as zone 0. Our safe systems of work adopt procedures to ensure that petrol tanks are opened with non sparking tools in a restricted and monitored exclusion zone. The cleaning of petrol tanks is conducted under a confined space entry permit system, using non sparking, plastic and intrinsically safe equipment. Prior to entry, the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) would be reduced below 4% and constantly monitored using an atmospheric monitor. Gas free certificates are issued for a maximum duration of 24 hours following the cleaning process, after which further atmospheric monitoring would be required.
How long does underground fuel tank cleaning take?
This would depend on the requirements of the customer and the access available to enter the tank. Underground tanks are accessed via a chamber built into the floor accessed via a manhole lid. An average chamber is approx 3ft square and 18 inches deep, however some chambers have been known to be up to 5ft deep or even offset to the lid which prevent safe access to reach and remove the tank lid. A typical tank clean with good access is normally completed within one day, and where access is an issue, can formulate a plan to ensure the work is carried out in a suitable and timely fashion.
