Heating oil tanks often contain a certain level of water that accumulates over time from condensation.
When water mixes with today’s modern bio-diesel, it can promote the growth of microbes which live in the interface, consume fuel and leave a sticky residue.
This residue can regularly block filters and cause heating to fail. Our domestic oil tank cleaning services can help to protect against heating failure through water and microbe contamination in a number of ways:
Option 1 – Water Removal
By simply pumping the water content from the tank bottom, thus ensuring that the oil level drops below the outlet.
Option 2 – Domestic Oil Tank Cleaning
By pumping the liquid contents from the tank into temporary IBC’s to allow the interface to form. An internal clean of the tank, followed by the returning of any clean oil from above the oil/water interface.
Option 3 – Domestic Oil Tank Cleaning with Fuel Polishing
As with option 2, but with the inclusion of passing your remaining oil through our mobile centrifuge to ensure it is perfectly clean before returning it to your tank. This would only really be used in extreme cases.
However, if you feel your tank is beyond saving, you may wish to consider an oil tank replacement, details of which can be found here.
For your peace of mind, we are accredited under the SafeContractor, CHAS and Constructionline schemes for safe systems in Procurement.

When do I know if my oil tank needs cleaning?
Generally if your filter has needed cleaning more than once, it would be sensible to do something with your tank. With the majority of domestic tanks being exposed to the elements, condensation build up is a common occurrence. Water will reside at the bottom of the tank, which again in the majority of cases is where the oil is drawn from. Water will react with today’s modern bio fuels, generating microbes that eventually form a sticky sludge. As this growth multiplies, it will simply get closer to the draw off point until it eventually enters the system.
Is cleaning a domestic oil tank a big job?
Not really. The majority of cases can be solved by simply inserting a probe to the bottom of the tank and drawing off water and sludge. As the oil sits on top of the water, by removing everything underneath the oil, it allows the oil to fall below the draw off point and keep the system clean. This may be a short term solution and keep the system clean for another few years, however if you have an old single skinned tank, it may just serve to give you enough time to make a decision on the future of your tank. A full clean of the tank can be more costly, however, if for instance you have a 5 year old bunded tank, it can bring the insides back to their original condition.
Should I just replace the tank?
This will really depend on your current tank. If you have a single skinned tank, ideally replacing it should be on your radar, as a bunded tank would give much more protection against leaks. However, this may not be an option for everyone. In this case, we would aim to find you the cheapest solution in order to give you enough time to make a decision. As mentioned previously, sometimes just removing the water from a tank can extend the life of it for a number of years.
