THE TANK CLEANING PROCESS
A Safety First Approach
With the appropriate equipment and a strong focus on safety, our tank cleaning services are executed swiftly and efficiently, causing minimal disruption to businesses while delivering exceptional results.
Every job is unique, which is why we provide a customised proposal and a safe work system tailored to meet your specific requirements. All of our work is carried out by our dedicated in-house team, eliminating the need for subcontractors.
Upon receiving your order, the team at JWH will take charge of your underground tank cleaning project. We proactively liaise with your local petroleum licensing authority (if dealing with petrol) to notify them of the proposed work and to submit the relevant health and safety documentation for approval.
Although diesel tank cleaning and petrol tank cleaning may appear similar, they each entail distinct safe work systems. Our highly experienced in-house operatives employ specialised equipment to safely open, empty and clean both underground petrol and diesel tanks, ensuring their subsequent safety for either recommissioning or disposal.
We never subcontract any of our tank cleaning operations; JWH operatives oversee the entire process from start to finish.
Our team is always available to address your enquiries before, during and after the tank cleaning process.
Should you wish to discuss your specific needs with one of our experienced engineers, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 01132 635163, email us at [email protected], or simply complete our enquiry form here.
Obtaining a Quotation
To provide you with a quotation, we simply require some key information to assess your specific needs. We encourage you to reach out to us directly, as we can often provide you with a preliminary budget estimate based on our extensive experience in the field.
Here’s what we need to know:
- The number of tanks and their working capacities that need cleaning.
- The estimated quantity of fuel or oil present and whether fuel polishing will be necessary.
- The current or last grade of fuel or oil stored in the tank.
- If possible, please provide photographs of the tanks and access points, including those beneath manhole covers or on top of the tank.
With this essential information, we can clearly understand your requirements and endeavour to return a quotation promptly. Our quotation will outline the necessary steps for tank removal, along with details of any documentation we’ll provide, authorities we’ll notify on your behalf, and any pertinent caveats that may be required for your project.

UNDERGROUND FUEL RANK CLEANING FAQs
Discovering a contamination issue in your diesel tank doesn’t necessarily mean losing your entire stock of diesel. Various undesirable outcomes can result from tank contamination, most of which can be resolved through tank cleaning.
Ideally, you should aim to use your existing stock as much as possible, allowing the tank bottoms to be pumped into a suitable holding container during the cleaning process. In cases where this isn’t feasible, we can arrange for a temporary holding tank to facilitate fuel transfer. After the tank has been thoroughly cleaned, any remaining fuel can be reintroduced into the tank, either by direct pumping or by passing it through our twin stage fuel polishing rig if required.
An empty and open petrol tank is considered a high-risk zone, deemed as zone 0. Our safety protocols are designed to mitigate risks when cleaning petrol tanks. We follow strict procedures to ensure tanks are opened using non-sparking tools within a controlled and monitored exclusion zone.
Cleaning operations inside petrol tanks are conducted under a confined space entry permit system, employing non-sparking and intrinsically safe equipment. Before entry, we reduce the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) and continuously monitor it using atmospheric monitoring devices. We can issue gas-free certificates where required, valid for a maximum of 24 hours post-cleaning, after which ongoing atmospheric monitoring is required.
The duration of underground fuel tank cleaning can vary based on customer requirements and the available access points to the tank. Underground tanks are typically accessed through chambers built into the floor, accessible via a manhole lid. These chambers vary in size and depth, with an average size of approximately 3ft square and 18 inches deep. However, some chambers can be deeper, up to 5ft, or offset from the lid, making it challenging to reach and remove the tank lid safely.
Under normal circumstances with good access, a typical tank cleaning can often be completed within a single day. In cases where access is more challenging, we work closely with the customer to develop a plan that ensures the work is carried out in a suitable and timely manner.
Underground tanks can accumulate sediment and contaminants over time, affecting fuel quality and potentially causing equipment damage. Regular cleaning is crucial to maintain efficiency and safety.
The frequency of cleaning depends on factors like tank size, usage, and environmental conditions. Typically, tanks should be cleaned every 3-5 years.
Signs include decreased fuel efficiency, increased filter clogs, unusual odours, and visible sediment in the fuel.
No, tank cleaning should only be performed during scheduled downtime to ensure safety and prevent contamination of ongoing operations.
We employ specialised equipment, including non-sparking tools and self-contained breathing apparatus and to clean underground tanks safely and efficiently.
