Forecourt Decommissioning FAQs
The duration of the decommissioning process varies depending on the size and complexity of your forecourt. Typically, most forecourts can be decommissioned within two weeks, with many completed even sooner. Please note that these timescales exclude any remediation works required for planning applications. When you request a quotation, we will provide you with a firm estimate of the expected completion time.
Our primary goal during forecourt decommissioning is to ensure the site’s safety as quickly as possible. Our initial step is to clean and degas any fuel tanks on-site to eliminate the risk of fire or explosion from fuel storage. Once the tanks are certified gas-free, we proceed to clear the site of obstructions such as canopies, kiosks, or car washes, creating sufficient space to excavate the underground tanks. After removing the tanks from the ground, soil samples are obtained for eventual backfilling, leaving the site safe and ready for redevelopment.
If you’ve acquired an old filling station without records, it’s advisable to contact your local petroleum licensing authority. Sites storing petrol must be licensed, and tank records should be available. Depending on your location, petroleum licensing can fall under local Trading Standards or the Fire Service. As members of the APEA (Association for Petroleum and Explosives Administration), we can access the database of all local petroleum authorities.
Feel free to make an enquiry with us, and we can assist you in finding the right contact.
