Underground Tank Removal

Service Overview

Tank removal is very much at the heart of our operation. We can offer tank removal services to commercial customers across the country.

As with any of our services, a tank removal quote will be tailored to your requirements, as no two jobs are the same. Please see below the section on obtaining a quotation.

We can safely and efficiently remove large scale fuel and oil tanks from basements, excavate underground tanks, lift and transport above ground tanks, through to small workshop tanks.

Obtaining a Quotation

In order for us to provide a quotation, we simply need to gather a few pieces of information to allow us to assess your tank removal needs.

  • The number of, and working capacities of the tank / tanks to be removed
  • If the tanks are to be removed whole, the physical dimensions of the tank/s to allow us to allocate the transport required.
  • The current or last grade of fuel or oil held in the tank.
  • What access we have to the tanks.
  • If the tank or tanks are no longer in use, the level of fuel / oil in them for disposal.
  • Where in the UK the tanks are located.
  • If possible some pictures of the tanks and subsequent access e.g. beneath manhole covers or access for large vehicles.

With that information, we can gain an immediate picture of your requirements, and often get a quotation back to you very quickly. The quotation will set out the work required to remove your tank, along with details of any documentation that we’ll issued to you, authorities that will be notified by us and caveats that may be required.

Underground Fuel Tank Removal Services

Our underground fuel tank removal services can look after the entire process, giving you peace of mind that the job is being handled correctly. Upon receipt of a purchase order, the process for your underground fuel tank removal will be looked after by our own team. We will contact your local petroleum licensing authority directly (if working with petrol), to inform them of the proposed work, and to submit the relevant documentation for approval.

As mentioned in our underground fuel tank cleaning section, we have the ability to ensure your fuel tanks are completely clean and gas free, prior to any underground fuel tank removal taking place.

If your underground tanks are being excavated, we use a network of accredited machine operators to excavate the tanks, whilst they remain under a gas free certificate and our direct supervision.

We operate a safe excavation policy when removing underground tanks, with no digging being undertaken until all underground services have been identified and isolated if required.

We also have the ability to carry out an underground fuel tank removal from hard to reach places, or when sites have been built on after the tanks were installed. Our cutting methods allow underground fuel tanks to be removed in pieces, vastly reducing the size of the excavation required.

Safety is paramount on our sites, we always ensure the area is securely fenced to prevent any unauthorised entry. Although underground fuel tank removal can be intrusive, we will always work tirelessly to ensure the impact on our client is minimal.

Additional Underground Fuel Tank Decommissioning Services

  • How long does it take to remove a fuel or oil tank?

This really depends on the size of the tank and the location. If the tank is accessible with a lorry mounted crane, the process can be completed in as little as a couple of hours. If the tank is located inside a building, it could take longer as the cleaning and cutting process would need to be conducted on site.

  • How much does it cost to remove a fuel or oil storage tank?

This really depends on what type of tank you have, what grade of oil it has held and where it is positioned. Bunded diesel tanks may well hold a re-sale value which can be credited against the cost, where as heavy fuel oil tanks can often require heating and extensive cleaning which will impact on cost. Discussing your requirements directly with an engineer can immediately give you an indication on the scope of the work required.

  • What are the risks involved with removing a fuel or oil tank?

Working with fuel and oil is a high risk sector and the consequences of negligence can be severe. By using our extensive experience, along with meticulous planning and careful execution, we are proud of our safety record. All work is conducted in line with a site specific safe system of work, accompanied by detailed risk assessments. Copies of all documents will be forwarded to each customer for inspection prior to commencing works, with signed copies being carried by our team throughout the job.
